Men Seeking (2006) — Sound installation

Description

This is an architectural sound installation, which plays voicemails of men who are using online services to find a long-term girlfriend. In each recording, the caller describes himself and what type of woman he wants to find. The voices range from proud and hopeful to desperate and broken. Each call reveals a distinct vulnerability, and encourages us to relate to a stranger's constructed emotional state.

The installation accommodates just one person and inside sound plays from an overhead. Inside, a black velvety fabric dampens the sound and act as cocoon. The intent is to create an empty space for your mind and shut out other sensory perceptions to focus on only interior thoughts. From the outside, muffled voices can be heard and only the feet of the person inside the enclosure can be seen, suggesting a changing room or other temporary transformation space.

Singular Experience (2006)

This piece uses a similar audio source as What I'm Looking For but moves into the a new interaction model which I call the "singular experience" which operates on two principles. The first is to physically isolate the viewer from the rest of the social interactions of the gallery so that the interaction is between just the artwork and the viewer. The second is to provide unique but similar content for each person. Each person sees or hears different images and sounds. Without a shared descriptive experience, I hope to establish dialogue on an interpretive level.
